Dark Market - Uncivilisation, 1 week to go! at Brixton Village Market

May 22, 2010 from 11am to 5:30pm
Supermarkets and shopping malls have been around for a couple of generations - but marketplaces have been around for thousands of years as sociable gathering spaces, places of performance, conversation and ideas as well as trade. So we want to celebrate the resilience of the marketplace, embedded within a community and as a cultural crossing point, with our last pre-festival gathering ahead of UNCIVILISATION 2010 - a day of music, storytelling, discussions and fun at Brixton Village indoor…See More

I'm a budding anthropologists (a subject area otherwise known as people watching for geeks) and will be working for Uncivilised as in intern for the next couple of months. Expect to see me at the prefestival meets and online. Come and say hello to me and tell me a good use for dandelions or a good folk story. I love those!
What drew you to the Dark Mountain Project?
An interest in social and environmental issues and the realisation that they are so inextricably linked. I helped out with the briefing papers for some recent research on the impacts of climate change:

Not cheerful reading. Perhaps they will make you loose sleep too?

In light of this, The Dark Mountain Project seems like an exciting and positive prospect. I quite like my festivals too :D

Hi all! I started helping out at the Dark Mountain Project/ Uncivilisation yesterday. I’ll be mostly based in Brixton Village and wherever there is internet and a nice cuppa (suggestions please!).... you’ll

see me lurking with an inadvisably pink laptop. Until I received an email from my old college

looking for interns, I hadn’t even heard about the Dark Mountain Project or Uncivilisation.

A bit of snoop on the website…

Dandelion burgers:
1 cup dandelion flowers
1 cup flour
1 egg or egg substitute
1tsp herbs
milk (quarter to half a cup)
small onion, chopped
seasoning

This is a fantastic recipe - very subtle, sublime flavour, and very easy to do. I'm an addict, and the flowers are out in force at the mo so easy to collect them. Just collect the flower tops. The when home hold the base of the flower, and then twist the petals from the flowerhead. Don' worry if some green bits fall in.

Put everything into a bowl and mixl well with a fork - can be quite hard going! You should add enough milk to form a thick batter (or gloopy one if you want pancakes instead of burgers). Then fry for about 5 mins on either side.

I prefer them cold, when the flavour is more prevalent, but either way they are very good.

Hi Kat,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm loving the tolerance on this site. Most people just aren't interested in the difference between morality and reality elsewhere. I'm not sure I will be able to convince anybody here yet, but, as far as I can work out thus far, there is a willingness to debate taboo possibilities that is dead almost everywhere else.

I will be coming to the election party (and probably Uncivilisation) so I look forward to meeting you there.

Kind regards,

Matthew

PS don't get me started on veterinary medicine. Like conservation (and a lot of other moral enterprises), it is about exploiting emotion by inverting the laws of nature and I am a frustrated critic; totally unable to puncture the veil of delusion that everybody is currently hiding behind.

Hi Kat,

Thanks for the welcome :-)

There's a lot of interesting ideas coming through the site, so the festival should be a joy.

I'm gutted I can't make the festival, I had wanted to raise a suggestion that I'd spoken to Paul & Dougald about briefly at the launch of last year's Idler magazine. I've attached a PDF of the idea - it still needs work, but i think the basic principle may have some value to the wider DM project.

Incidently if you add some chopped ramson leaves to Sonny's Dandelion Burger recipe you'll add a new dimension ;-)

Love,
W

Hello Kat! Hope you're enjoying a restful and reflective end to the year - and thanks for the card!

It does feel like a long time since Llangollen. Paul and I are visiting a possible site for Unciv 2011 next week. Somewhere wilder, more outdoors, where the camping and the events could all happen on one site. Once we're sure where and when it's happening, I want to host a conversation on this site about experiences of last year and desires for this year. We'll also be bringing together a larger group of people to organise it, so the whole thing is a bit saner. Hope you'll be able to come - although this year, you're definitely not allowed to do any work - you did enough for at least a decade the first time around!

Give me a shout if you're in London any time soon.
