You said ‘sit back and think about the magnitude of that’ then you turned, lantern in hand, and left in the darkness with your fellow mountaineers. I gasped for fear, for oxygen. My tears spoiled and singed-dry in this new world of…

Joanna Austin said… Hi Ilka - I only came across DM a few weeks ago but it really hit me and I have started to tell a few friends about it. The movement seems to be going well in the UK but we can get it going here. I used to read a fair bit of poetry and recall the Pantheist movement (Coleridge wrote about it) which spoke of God or spirituality in nature. Strictly speaking I am an agnostic now but have started to think that while DM is not a belief system, the ideas are wonderful and make us all think back to what was important and should become more so now - the landscape and the animals that permit us to be here.
Ideally I would like to get more people from Aust (I am in Sydney) talking and perhaps even meet as a group one day - it is so energising to meet properly like minded types and it would be wonderful to think and talk about what the definition of civilization is because I dont think it is what they are telling us.
what brought you to DM?

Thanks for those ideas. I want to read more about deep ecology - have looked briefly at some main precepts and I like what I read. One of the issues that has concerned me for a long time is the motivation for many people behind their climate change and environmental activism, as it seems mainly to be about salvaging the human race, rather than considering the planet for its own sake. Also, I see that population control is an important concern and I wholeheartedly agree with that! I have always thought that a responsible attitude to population control is the key but so many people will not discuss this issue.
I am going to start on my reading - there is a whole new DE world out there I think.

Hi Ilka,
It's great that you're organising a DM gathering in Oz, at the same time as Unciv. Good on you. We'll raise a toast to you all from the UK festival! It might be worth giving Matt Wicking a shout, he and his band 'The General Assembly' recorded a Dark Mountain inspired EP, and he played at Unciv a couple of years ago. I think he's Melbourne based but might be up for coming up to Sidney. You'll find him on this network.
All best, Dougie
