UNCIVILISATION: The Dark Mountain Network

A space for conversations in a time of global disruption

We've heard from people who are travelling from all over the UK to UNCIVILISATION 2010 - and a few from further afield.

Tell us where you'll be coming from - and let's see if we can connect you up to other people in your area who are coming to the festival.

EDIT: For those coming by public transport, the nearest mainline rail station is Ruabon (2.5hrs from London via Chester). There are local buses from there to Llangollen, which takes 15 minutes.

What seemed like a rather straightforward question: "Is it worth going, and can I afford the cost?" has gotten more complicated – that's what undigested complexity feels like. Now I'm wondering whether it's worth buying a ticket for a series of flights that may not take off, and whether I want to open myself to the slight, but very real possibility of becoming stranded in the UK for an extended period of time.

This is exactly the kind of thing Dark Mountain is about, and why attending the camp and festival is such a good idea. It's just that holding an "international" festival is already problematic, that's even without having heard anything from little-unpronounceable's bigger Icelandic neighbor!

This kind of experience of thwartedness is becoming more common. It's been a large part of everyday life for the poor and marginalized for a long time. Now it's beginning to be "our" turn.

Life in a maze has its challenges. There are the intellectual and physical challenges of attempting to navigate, and there are the emotional challenges of dealing with frustration and one's inability to find a way to move that appears to be beneficial and is "do-able."

We live in a moment of transition. This moment will play out in a time-frame we cannot predict. We "hope" – there's that word signifying our powerlessness in the face of what we would like to see – that we have enough time. Enough time to forge and build connections and to learn from and share perspectives with others who may be far away. For now we have some expectation that a trip of a few thousand miles can be accomplished in a day, or that we can type away on a little box and be read around the world.

There's no telling how long either of these will be realistic expectations.

I do "hope" – I'm reduced to this plea – to go to Wales next month.
My wife, Adrienne Odasso, and I are coming from oop North in Leeds. If there's anyone else coming from the area drop us a line.
I'll be coming from up north in Leeds too! I'm planning on getting the train and cycling. I'll probably be going for the weekend only.

Marvelous! Drop by Leeds Tuttle in May if you're interested in meeting up. Otherwise, drop me a line and we'll have coffee sometime.

We're taking the train down to Chester and a friend is giving us a lift from there. See you then if not sooner.

Sheffield...
Intending to take the train, but it involves 3 changes so if anyone's driving from hereabouts please get in touch.
We will be going sometime on the Friday from Halifax. If you can get to Halifax station you are welcome to come the rest of the way in the car with us.

I'm heading over by car from Mansfield area, just for the weekend - but could pick up from Worksop if that's easier for you from Sheffield? Or anyone else for that matter - have three seats in the car that I'm anxious to fill.
Coming from Ireland, all being well, with two passengers (all being well), and room for one or two more, at a squeeze. There would be some cost for the ferry. Still not sure when I'll be heading over, possibly around the 25th May ...?
I'm coming from (South) London. Thanks to complicated knock-on effects of a birth in my extended family, expected on 31 May, I won't know until just before the festival if/when I'll be able to go. Most likely scenario would be to leave early morning (pre-congestion charge) on Friday 28th, though if I get 'clearance' on Thursday, I could go then. Returning late Sunday... unless there is an emergency call before then.

If anyone can tolerate such woeful uncertainty, I'd be happy to offer them a lift.
coming from Nitten by the Bing, a small mining village south of Edinburgh in bonnie Scotland. Anyone else from round this way?
Depends when the Tuttle is! I have v important exams coming up so will only be around after 19th May. Will drop you a line around then. Looking forward to it!

I'm in Edinburgh, will be going for the weekend, and possibly also the pre-fest camping - haven't worked out logistics yet as still working out days.
